Autos – A bill intended to protect blind people and other pedestrians from the dangers posed by quiet cars will be introduced Wednesday in Congress.
"This is mind boggling stupid."
Your tax dollars at work.
Hey, I know! Let's elect either Hillary or Obama so that we can have our taxes raised even further to fund useless, go-nowhere programs that keep people employed!
It's as if there's a committee that sits around and thinks up new committees to invent. Ah well, when the money's pouring in and there's no accountability - why not?
I would think employing people, even with go-nowhere jobs is better than having them unemployed, right?
Not that it is my belief that the government should be in the business of pure employment for employment sake, but here is the question that I believe US was posing.
Would you prefer the government employing a person with a go-nowhere job, such as street sweeping or should they be provided with an unemployment check for sitting at home? Those are the two and only choices, as US posed. Take a swing if you dare.
As a conservative, I certainly would love to stop giving out free money and get some sort of return on the funds versus a check with no equity return on it. Given that prospect, I would think that it would inspire some to look toward a different employment opportunity. No free handouts.
(crickets)
I don't think it is all that bad, idea of add some type of wireless emitter to the car, to broadcast signal that car is coming. This could be used for other purposes notify other drivers about possibility of collision. The cost increase could be minimal. And it could be built as an extension to ODB wireless.
Obviously idea of making cars noisier => pure stupidity. We don't need anymore noise pollution. Simple wireless transmitter & receiver would be sufficient.
Its not just the blind, a car that doesn't make any noise can be a danger to anyone, especially in bussy cities.
How about pedestrians and motorist take responsibility for their actions, this is absolute nonsense, is this what we are paying our politicians to do?
globalwarmer SHUUSH! HOW DARE YOU?! How DARE you ask ANY CITIZEN to take responsibility for their actions, when there's a big government available to do it for them?
It's people like you who bring about freedom, democracies and capitalism! SHAME on you for your dissent! You should be jailed!
So you'd be against the government-guaranteed buyout (at an enormous profit) of Bear Stearns by JP Morgan, right?
And you were against Reagan's bailout of Chrysler in the '80s, too, right?
Or are citizens the only ones who are supposed to be responsible for their actions, but not corporations?
Its liek this.
We Christian Conservatives strongly believe that Corporate America is liek a Golden Calf.
We worship that ding dang calf.
Now some of you libbies might say "what about the every day American individual?"
Well, to us, individuals are SINNERS!!
So, since the individual is a SINNER, there must be somthing OPPOSITE of sinner. You know, cause to us, everthing is BLACK and WHITE.
Ergo, Corporations is our SALVATION!!
YIPPEE!!!!
Hmmm. I wonder if this might be why Mohandas Gandhi said; "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
No. We aint.
We are GOLDEN CALF worshipppers!!!
NOW LETS WARM UP THE GLOBE WITH SOME GOOD OLE CO2!!!!
BOOYAH!!!
A real problem, perhaps, but why legislate the worst solution possible???
Heaven forbid anything creative...Perhaps a magnetometer that blind people could use to detect the presence of an oncoming hunk of metal?
Or perhaps each car should come with a politician - lots of useless noise combined with plenty hot air to power the air-bag inflation system.
If you stand on a sidewalk with cars cruising by at 25 mph, you'll notice they make more wind noise than engine sounds unless the car is accelerating or has a ridiculous exhaust. I would imagine a blind person with enhanced hearing would pick up on that. Also the driver has this neat little gadget on the steering wheel called a horn and if all else fails the driver could actually apply the brakes.
globalwarmer, stop. Please desist right now. We will soon have a government that controls our every action, provides for us and looks after our every need. What you're suggesting is that an individual have a free will and be able to think for himself, and we will not have it. Please donate all of your money to the Democratic party, vote Hillary or Obama, and then sit back and have your life controlled. There is no other way.

Aw - COME ON! Jesus Haephestus Christ. Now, the Absolutely Politically Correct idiots are trying to implement something to make cars NOISIER? What a bunch of knuckleheads. The government is now undertaking to compel the entire automobile industry - already having problems - to make care NOISIER? To solve a problem that apparently doesn't even really exist? On behalf of a VERY small percentage of voters? With MY money? SONOFABITCH! This is starting to REALLY pi*s me off! I'm writing my elected representative to make fun of them. Again.
I don't really believe it's the politically correct idiots, joe. (Yes, the National Federation for the Blind is pushing for the legislation, but what would you expect from an organization whose sole purpose is to serve as advocates for teh blind?)
Since no instances of blind people being hurt by hybrids have been recorded, since the blind usually know when not to step off curbs and into traffic, and since the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is "eager to address the issue," I'm guessing auto manufacturers are behind this because it's costly to design new hybrids and the bill will make hybrid cars less pleasant to drive.
You may have a point. Of course, it's expensive to design ANY new car. The thing about hybrids is, THEY ARE SELLING. So, at least they can recoup their development costs if they can actually SELL the things. Big Auto is probably hoping for a government subsidy (another one) to put a noise maker on the cars.
Oh -- I suspect that "eager to address the issue" actually means, "screw you - we aren't doing it, but we'll smile to your face and PRETEND we care."
You're right that it's costly to design any car and the industry could recoup their development costs because there's a market for hybrids. But that's been the case for smaller, more fuel-efficient cars for close to 30 years now, and the American auto industry fought producing them for most of that time. (That worked really well for their P&L sheets, too, but somehow it never seemed to bother them enough to change their strategy.)
The auto industry lobbies against raising CAFE standards at every opportunity. I haven't read a lot about it, but I know I'm not the first to suggest the possibility that U.S. auto manufacturers and the oil industry are working together to defeat raising fuel economy.
"I haven't read a lot about it, but I know I'm not the first to suggest the possibility that U.S. auto manufacturers and the oil industry are working together to defeat raising fuel economy."
I would agree with this completely.
The thing with the auto industry is that they complain about the changes they have to make, but they do not complain about the money they receive from the customer for the changes. They do not do it at cost. I think they pretend to not want to have to do something that will pass cost to the customer, but all the while are rubbing their hands together.
The irony is that they don't complain about offering things at only a minority choose as options, like Sat radio and Nav systems. Everyone has to purchase a cat converter and everyone must pay for it, which they make a profit on.
It is similar to the whole idea of dealer invoice equaling the price the dealer in the end pays for the vehicle.
Why not just have the hybrids emit some sort of pleasant odor...flowers, baked cookies, etc...
Oooh! I'll bet my Prius would love to smell like orange blossoms.
Hmmm...orange blossoms...sounds pretty good, too!
Install a giant bong,,,,, it will smell nice and you'll smell it way before it gets there
Not sure about USA, but here in Canada when the walk sign goes on there is also a beeping sound for the blind to know they have the right to cross.
I honestly do not think that there are too many blind Jay walkers
"here in Canada when the walk sign goes on there is also a beeping sound for the blind to know they have the right to cross."
That's great, Hannibarf. I'm glad to see Cana-DUH is moving into the 21st century.
But tell me something. Are these walk signs equipped with any sort of apparatus to assist dim-witted, slow-learning dullards such as yourself? You know, like a simple crayon drawing of stick figures and toy cars, or something with bright, primary colors that a person of your, shall we say, "subdued intellect" would be able to easily respond to?
Let me know if you see something like that being used. I would be interested to know whether or not Cana-duh is catering to the needs of its people or if, like in the United States, the government just wastes people's time and money.
Ah, sainte...name-calling again...showing us your immaturity, huh...LOL...
NUMPTY; how nice of you to show us what you do at a cross walk, no wonder you have sh it for brains !!! how many times have you been struck by moving vehicles while trying to draw your stick figures, never can get them right can you.
Back to Wendy's, your burgers need flipping, oh thick and dense one.
As Jethro Tull said "You're as thick as a brick" !!!!ROTFLMAO what a dense NUMPTY you are,,, thanks for the laugh
One question. Is this your A game?
They should just require hybrids to have really long curb feelers that smack blind pedestrians as they drive by.
Or a mechanical leg to dropkick some sense in that empty head of yours.
It is obvious there only to keep your ears apart.
CannibusBarfly,
What keeps your ears apart besides the stuffing of Liberalism?
