Actually the lead in to this seems about right. The automobile has been one of the big destroyers of American society - ever since GM bought up public transport systems and closed them down in the 1930s. To say nothing of the fact that every child that lives within a mile of a major highway has a much higher probability of serious problems with cancer, asthma, ...
On top of that, excruciatingly boring to live in American suburbs and spend hours in traffic everyday. If you can, find a city that was built before the automobile and where the city center has not been destroyed by roads. Infinitely more intersting life.

Maybe true, but the point is ..?
What would we do? Go back to horses? They had problems too. Trains and buses are OK; but like it or not, you're travelling on their schedule and going where they want to go. The public pretty well chose that they liked using their own schedules better.
I am not one who espouses that because something can be done it should be. But we should all realize that everything--even if "desirable"-- carries a price, monetary or otherwise. The auto culture has always been a mixed blessing; what else is new?
Maybe someday the public will conclude that cars really haven't been worth it all. If that happens, then support for the whole culture around them will gradually erode. Till then, I don't think one has much choice but to accept them and nibble around the edges.

It's disgusting that we ever invented air conditioning, refrigeration and toilet paper. Along with autos, these tools of Satan have ruined the world.
What were we thinking? Blogs are regressive too, I guess.

Man, I thought people would talk about the fact that the Triton V8 was spitting sparkplugs. Boy, was I wrong. Instead it has turned into a political discussion.
