MTV's Pimp My Ride pimped a 65 Impala SS with a bot more than the usual 20 million video monitors scattered throughout the interior and trunk. This time they transplanted a Duramax diesel that ended up with 800 HP and 1400 lb-ft of torque into an Impala and came up with 25 MPG and a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds!

Wow, i take it back. I blasted this show's idea cause at 800hp they were mostly likely going to be getting like 8mpg. But they really did make it work well for the amount of power its got.. Sure its still bad milage, but for the horsepower thats one major feat.

Wow! 25 mpg! Now that's crap, especially since we can't produce anywhere near enough biodiesel to offset petroleum. This type of development is precisely why we are where we are with respect to energy use and cost.

I don't entirely agree with that statement, given the theoretical outputs of algae farms to produce biodiesel. Here's the Wikipedia entry. Read down to the Biodiesel Production part:

I hate to be redundant, I know I have posted this before, but I just think this is so cool, algae can be used to reduce greenhouse gases by using them to produce biodiesel and ethanol.

Uh... unless you have a car that is powered by solar cells you are using fossil fuels whether directly or indirectly. Want to use algae? How do they run the farms, thats right the boats aren't sail boats they are big diesels and they aint running on bio...

Okay you want to use Biodiesel? how do you think those farms grew the corn that provided the corn oil that turned into biodiesel... thats right big ass tractors using gallons of diesel.

The big lie is that you can make a clean car... even an electric car is using electricity that is made from burning coal or natural gas (not nearly enough hydro to supply all the homes in the west let alone the cars too).

Because this kind of algae also grows so fast, it can produce 15,000 gallons of biodiesel per acre. Just 60 gallons are produced from soybeans, which along with corn are the major biodiesel crops today.

Just what kind of tractors do you use, 15.000 gallons an acre, think you need a tune up!

To me it's not even a matter of making a completely "clean" car that burns no fossil fuels. For me, anything that helps support our own farmers and not buy so much middle eastern oil is a great idea. Cars, trucks, tractors, and ships have been running on petroleum fuels for so long that I think it's time for something better.

Maybe this won't solve everything, but this is a step in the right direction.

Before we get to excited about any alternative fuel wouldn't it be wise to find out the down sides,if it's true only one study on human exposure to bio-diesel exhaust has been done and it only used anecdotal evidence ...
